Chairpersons' Message

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is our pleasure to invite you to participate in the 16th International Conference on Concentrator Photovoltaic Systems (CPV-16), which will be held near Denver, Colorado on May 4-6, 2020.

CPV-16 is committed to delivering the premier technical conference in the classical areas of concentrator photovoltaics: cells, modules, systems, and optics. Additionally, in response to exciting new research germane to CPV—micro-CPV, micro-trackers, direct/diffuse hybrid collection, planar micro-tracking, space CPV, luminescent solar concentrators, building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), laser power converters, thermophotovoltaics (TPV), and solar fuel generation among others—an expanded program of next-generation CPV and CPV-adjacent technologies will be featured. CPV-16 will showcase both traditional and budding technologies to illustrate the diverse application space for the CPV technologist in 2020 and beyond. The conference puts an emphasis on encouraging the next generation of CPV scientists, and discounted registration for student researchers will be provided.

The conference will take place at the American Mountaineering Center in Golden, Colorado, part of the Denver metropolitan area. Both Golden and Denver have many attractions for visitors to experience beyond the conference, including the Denver Art Museum, Colorado School of Mines, many excellent restaurants and craft breweries, and of course the Rocky Mountains. The beautiful Rocky Mountain National Park is about 90 minutes north and well worth a visit.

The Denver area is also home to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory where the GaInP/GaAs multijunction solar cell, and later the inverted metamorphic multijunction solar cell, were first invented. Research into III-V solar cells for CPV applications has been a core strength of the NREL photovoltaics program for over 25 years, and NREL scientists continue to push the limits of performance in concentrator cells. NREL also has world-class measurement facilities including an ISO-certified PV measurements laboratory for cell and module efficiency. We are very pleased to host a technical tour of the NREL facilities following the conference.

Come to CPV-16!  We look forward to meeting you in Colorado!
